Aguilera confirms Madonna video tribute

Posted by Sylar On Wednesday, May 26, 2010

Christina Aguilera has confirmed that her latest video features several deliberate references to Madonna.

The singer, who took to the stage with Madonna and Britney Spears for a notorious performance at the 2003 VMAs, used her 'Not Myself Tonight' clip to salute the pop queen's legacy.

"One of my favourite videos ever is 'Express Yourself' by Madonna which came across as really strong and empowering which I always try to incorporate through my expression of sexuality," Aguilera said.

"I love the direct reference I made to Madonna with the eye glass moment and the smoke and stairs. I was paying tribute to a very strong woman who has paved the way before."

'Not Myself Tonight', the lead single from Aguilera's upcoming album Bionic, is available to download now.

    wow...she's still doing music???

  2. Anonymous Said,

And as usual with lesser artists these "direct references" just come off as cheap imitation. Almost like a little girl in the mirror singing into a hairbrush, playing Madonna.

If you've seen the video there are MANY "direct references" to the Express Yourself video. So many, one could argue it's based off of it.

For anyone keeping score, Aguilera has a long history of STEALING Madonna's imagery. Remember her "tribute" to the Frozen video?

Who cares about this low-budget bitch?

LOL poor Christina.. she actually needs to start making relevant music, and realise a tribute to shit music\video clips is more of an insult haha

Christina is more Madonna than Britney´ll ever be

You guys are always complaining. If she wouldn't have mentioned Madonna you'd be all over her just like now. Just be pleased she giving Madonna full credit. People accused her of copying Gaga in this video. I'm glad she admitted this was a Madonna tribute and it has nothing to do with Gaga

its more of a Gaga tribute, but at least shes giving credit where credit is do. yes, christina has an excellent voice, but her music has always been boring to me. im curious to hear the rest of the songs on her upcoming album. i <3 gaga

Did anyone see Christina performing on Oprah? She completed ripped off Madonna's Give It 2 Me video look! I'm so desperate for Madonna to make new music/new videos and put these Madonna wannabes to shame!

i'm not a huge fan of christina, but i do like some of her music. some of the "bionic" tracks are innovative and cool...kinda wish madonna was putting some stuff like that out. poor christina though, everyone from perez to critics have always been negative towards her...whether it's her current look, music, whatever. I think she's def smarter and pushes boundaries more than britney. however, the true innovator in my opinion will always be madonna...nobody can ever top that lady. let's face it, these much younger artists are gonna be ripping off madonna left and right.

    just my opinion...

I personally have never had a problem with Christina. I don't really love any of her music, but she by far has the best voice going on in music. I was always surprised that Britney got so much bigger than Christina. Makes no sense to me, but that's typical. If anyone was to be the "next Madonna" I would consider her over Britney anyday. I watched the video, and there are MANY more Madonna homages going on here (BA tour Papa/Like a Prayer segment). But, I don't mind it coming from her. She has always admitted to being a huge fan of M. Leave the girl alone and let her express her love for Madonna. Ain't nothing wrong with that.

Christina and I feel the same way. GagGag who?? and pay homage to Madonna DAILY. sadly, Christina's song isnt really good enough for a real Madonna homage...but the video is ok. it's no EXPRESS YOURSELF...lol.

Christina Alligator you always been so lame and trashy looking , appealing only to the same skunks like yourself.

    @TREY

She can express her love for Madonna, but she needs to do it in a way that isn't blatant cheap imitation. To essentially photocopy imagery/looks from a greater artist with NO modulation and appropriate it as your own....just makes you look like a wannabe.

More talented people do this by taking influences and making them their own.

For example, Madonna's Bedtime Story video was a kind of homage to some of her favorite painters. She didn't just copy them, but blended them through her own artistic filter, creating a final piece that was uniquely Madonna.

Christina does have a great voice on a technical level, she can hit all the notes and she can hit them on key, however, I don't want to hear her sing. That big *technically* beautiful voice doesn't move me. Singing is about emotion. Having a wonderful voice and knowing how REALLY interpret music/lyrics and give them emotional power are two completely different things. This is why people that don't possess *technically* beautiful voices, are considered some of the best singers in history.

Billy Holiday, Stevie Nicks, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner and the list goes on are just a few examples.

I'll add to the above post, that copying an artist in the way Christina has, even as a "tribute", is almost like saying you're as good as that artist. It makes you look 2nd rate, as imitations are rarely as good as the real thing.

If this had been a one time thing...then great! It's a tribute. However, Christina's has been on Madonna's tit for YEARS. Enough already.

I personally really liked the christina video and song. Although I saw christina copying/replicating alot of female artists Madonna, Gaga, Britney and a few others. But I took the song as a female empowerment song. A song that tried to say lets come together not devide. Lets celebrate our individuality and stop all the talking behind eachothers back. Sorta like lets just celebrate our existence and the fact that we can express ourselves in this way. But anyway didnt Madonna replicate Marilyn Monroe in Material Girl. So yeah I do agree its better to pay tribue or show that this person inspired you by not just doing what they did but making it your own. Anyway I dont love christina but I think she is okay and same with gaga even though I like gaga more than christina. But anyway even though I like to put my two cents in and I love madonna above all the rest no one is going to win we are all just going to bicker and bitch and slame for the rest of our lives. I wasnt even going to read thess comments cause I already know what I was going to hear but I have an insatiouble appetite for curiosity.
