Stone-throwing children protect Madge from snappers

A group of school children have protected Madonna from journalists during her visit to a Malawi orphanage by pelting them with stones.

The incident happened as Madonna and David Banda were visiting the orphanage where the superstar adopted him from last year.

As Madonna arrived in her convoy a scrum of journalist tried to follow her in to the orphanage compound.

They suddenly met resistance from a group of teenagers in black and yellow uniforms from a secondary school in Mchinji who hurled stones at journalists’ cars.

The children formed a protective ring around the compound as policemen stopped the reporters from entering the orphanage site.

Madonna, who was dressed in an African-style wraparound skirt and knee-high leather boots, eventually calmed the situation, inviting the journalist inside where she posed for photographs with one-year-old David and her daughter Lourdes,9.

Witnesses said they saw baby David reunited with his biological father, Yohane, who complained at the time of the adoption that he would have never given David up if he realised it was a permanent arrangement.

Madonna’s latest visit comes some six months after the couple signed interim adoption papers for baby David, who will live with Madonna and her film director Guy Ritchie for 18 months before the Malawian government decide to finalise the adoption.

Madonna’s spokeswoman has denied reports she plans to adopt a second child, a three-year-old called Grace.

She is paying for a new clinic to be built in the Malawian village of Gumulira.
