You're being too judgemental on Katy Perry, Anon. Just like the audience was with M when Like A Prayer came out... people don't get the message. It's not meant to be taken too seriously. Katy Perry is a good performer and amazing songwriter who's not afraid to sing about controversial issues to get attention. She's provocative and smart, just like M. And being ironic about her exboyfriend is not the same as being homophobic. Otherwise M would never like that song so much.
I am SO glad anonymous #1 said what I've been thinking. The first "I Kissed A Girl" was better, in the 90's. In Katy Perry's song, the kiss is just a meaningless stunt and she goes back to her boyfriend. I can't believe Madonna would enjoy something so stupid. Then again look at the set list for her tour.
I thought the performance was HORRID.....now I know why they interrupted her for a commercial. I dont know why they would let her sing like a virgin because she sounds really bad live.
Anonymous #1 and #2 are whack! u guys r obviously OLD! i agree with ED. i mean the performance wasn't great. but Katy is so original and provocative. i c so much of madonna in her. she knows how to push the envelope. just like M
There is nothing smart or wry about Katy Perry's lyrics. She uses the word "gay" to, in her mind, demean her ex in the song You're so Gay. She then talks about how kissing girls is what bad girls do and not what she's supposed to be doing. How in the world does that compare with Like a Prayer, Ed?! Compared to Madonna, Katy Perry is a trite, boring tease. She may be a capable singer (this video being evidence to the contrary though) and her songs definitely have a great beat but that doesn't excuse her from furthering stereotypes.
That was really awful. I can't stand her gender stereotyping and the homophobic undercurrent in her own music either.

Wow! She just gave new meaning to the word 'awful'.
