Madonna extends Sticky & Sweet tour but not in North America

Posted by Sylar On Saturday, January 31, 2009 19 comments

The touring industry is ebullient since Madonna has extended her Sticky & Sweet Tour for a second year, something she has never done. Madonna will perform 24-25 European concerts this summer beginning July 4 in London, ENG and the last one booked so far is on August 20 in Ljubljana, SLO. Paul Oakenfold is the opening act on all of the extended tour dates.
Sixteen concert dates have been released, and the London concert is the only repeat market from last year. The rest of the tour will include appearances in cities she has never performed in before, such as Werchter, BEL; Marseille, FRA; Hamburg, GER; Oslo, NOR; Helsinki, FIN; Tallinn, EST; and Ljubljana, SLO; as well as stops in Romania, Hungary, Serbia and Bulgaria.

She has booked a few cities that she has not performed in for more than 15 years, including Madrid, SPA; Gothenburg, SWE; and Munich, GER. Shows are to be announced for Bulgaria, Hungary, Russia, Romania and Serbia.

Arthur Fogel, Live Nation's Chairman of Global Music and CEO of Global Touring/Artist Nation, advised TicketNews that there is no chance for a North American extension of the tour. ”This is a first for me” Madonna said in a statement. “I've never extended a tour before. I'm excited to be going back on the road, visiting places I've never been and returning to places I love.” In 2008, the Sticky & Sweet Tour was seen by 2.35 million fans in 58 cities and grossed about $282 million. The tour boasted record-breaking ticket sales everywhere, including 650,000 tickets sold in her series of South American dates; 72,000 tickets at Zurich's Dubendorf Airfield -- the largest audience ever assembled for a show in Switzerland; 75,000 tickets in London and four sell outs in New York's Madison Square Garden (60,364 tickets).

This new run of dates will “further solidify Madonna's position as one of the top selling touring artists of all time,” added Fogel, the tour producer. And despite reports in the Australian media that four concerts are scheduled for an September/October outing Down Under, Fogel said that there is no validity to the reports. Madonna has only toured Australia once -- back in 1993.

Madonna's Arena date in Manchester (UK)

Posted by Sylar On Friday, January 30, 2009 1 comments

Madonna will perform at the M.E.N. Arena in one of only two confirmed British dates this year.
The pop superstar brings her Sticky and Sweet world tour to Manchester in July, before heading to Europe.
It is only the third appearance 50-year-old Madonna has made in the city in 25 years, and this time she will be accompanied by trance DJ Paul Oakenfold.
Madonna first played in the city at the Hacienda in 1984, her British debut which was filmed for Channel 4 music show The Tube. She returned in 2004 with her sell-out Re-Invention tour.
The Sticky and Sweet tour came to Europe last year but did not stop in Manchester. It was the biggest grossing tour in history for a solo artist, featuring tracks from her latest No 1 album, Hard Candy, as well as old classics.
Tickets for the fully-seated July 7 show, which follows a London date, are priced £65, £85, £110 and £175 and go on sale next Friday. Call 0844 847 8000.

Sweden in ecstasy for Madonna!

Posted by Sylar On Friday, January 30, 2009 0 comments

News are all over Swedish magazines about Madonna's visit to Gothenburg this coming August. It will be her second concert in Sweden in 19 years, and her first at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg. Her last concert was at the dreadful substitute "venue" for Ullevi, Eriksberg.

Ticket prices are 695 and 1195 plus box office handling fee. Tickets will go on sale on February the 9th at 9.am local time. Around 55.000 tickets should be available, as it is the usual number of tickets for a concert at Ullevi.
Swedish Live Nation is overjoyed, and says that the deal was finished just a few days ago.

Why is Madonna horsing around in Palm Beach?

Posted by Sylar On Tuesday, January 27, 2009 1 comments

It may come as no surprise to her millions of fans to find out that Madonna likes horses. She's certainly got the legs for riding.

But polo ponies? Whacking little balls around with a wooden mallet?
Wait, I'm starting to see the appeal ...
Seems the freshly free Madonna may soon be watching a bit of polo at the hoity-toity, upper-crusty FTI Wellington Equestrian Festival at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.
According to my old friend Sharon Robb at the Sun-Sentinel newspaper in Fort Lauderdale, Madonna has been working with British riding coach Daisy Trayford at the SF multimillion-dollar 14-ring facility.
Madonna was rumored to make an appearance at Sunday's $50,000 Equisport Agency Grand Prix. She was spotted by Dish Rag spies at the Equestrian Center this weekend, checking out the scene but mentioned she might not make an appearance in the stands due to press and photographers.
Our source says: "Madonna was in a box with a few other adults at the table watching the horses jump. She had an orange hat on with her hair pulled back. I did not see any kids with her or A-Rod. I know that she is here for two weeks with her trainer."
According to Robb's report, Trayford has worked with Madonna since she purchased two horses from Trayford’s Exmoor Eventing.
If she does come to some events, she won’t be lonely.
Robb sez rocker Bruce Springsteen may attend to watch his daughter Jessica and Big Apple Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg could turn up to see daughter Georgina. CNN chatter Lou Dobbs might come to watch daughter Hillary.

Sticky & Sweet in 2009!

Posted by Sylar On Friday, January 23, 2009 15 comments

So for once the rumours - or part of them - seem to be true.
MadonnaTribe has heard and can report that the Madonna team is indeed working on plans to hit the road again this Summer.
It won't be a proper new tour
, but rather an extension of last year's show. It is currently planned to last two months - July and August - and it should mainly visit cities where the 2008 tour hasn't stopped. Also. as of now, this is shaped as a European tour only.
It is probably too early to say which countries will be included. Marseille in France made the headlines today with yet to be confirmed reports of Madonna performing at the Velodrome in mid-July.
The other stops that have been mentioned the most by the rumour mill so far have been Milan, Italy, where Madonna is rumoured to play San Siro's Meazza Stadium, and a short residency at Greenwhich's O2 Arena in London, England.
There is certainly a lot more in the making so it will be better to wait until an official announcement turns rumours into facts, but the most discussed topic in the Madonna online community in this beginning of 2009 seems indeed to be true: Madonna will extend the Sticky & Sweet tour with a revamped show next Summer.

Madonna: São Paulo - the most incredible shows of S&S!

Posted by Sylar On Friday, January 23, 2009 2 comments

dfd
Brazilian magazine RG Vogue brings a short and very special note about Madonna and the Sticky & Sweet Tour, there's also an interview with Christian Lamb:

Lamb, who used to work on movies before working with the pop diva, told us that Madonna herself considers the São Paulo concert the most incredible of her tour. "She was very emotional with the end of Hard Candy. She cried during the entire show. We just realized that everything was going to end when we arrived in Brazil."
In Rio, a torrential rain almost ruined everything... "She considered not going on stage. This was a very important question. The crowd security is our responsibility. There was a car on the stage that could fall... you know? Anything could happen".

Lamb told RG that Madonna was amazed by the crowd reaction, and how everyone was so receptive even with the rain. "In America half of people would have left the stadium..." he said.

Marc Jacobs' Interview in French Vogue

Posted by Sylar On Wednesday, January 21, 2009 3 comments

nm_marc_jacobs_070911_ssv The new issue of French fashion magazine Vogue features an interview of Marc Jacobs by Loïc Prigent and of course the US stylist is asked about her collaboration with Madonna for the new Louis Vuitton campaign:

L.P.: How Madonna ended up on the Vuitton ads ?

M.J.: I'm very proud I got the idea and that our agendas could match. At her latest concert at the Stade de France I was very moved by her ability to change. Then on Monday morning, when I arrived at Louis Vuitton's office for a meeting with Antoine Arnault to choose the face for the new campaign, I told him: "Madonna". I text messaged her and less than ten minutes later she said yes. She always has her blackberry within sight. I told her about Brassaï, about a certain idea of Paris. And if there's someone who can understand Style, it's her, she isn't a newbie when it comes to fashion. The photo shoot lasted one afternoon, between people who trust each other, it went smoothly.

L.P.: New York newspapers report she was paid $10 million ?

M.J.: I don't really have any idea about the exact figure but it's far from the truth.Madonna did it for another reason, not for money, since she agreed before any negociations took place. The financial aspect was dealt with later and quickly, between Guy Oseary, her manager, and Antoine Arnault.

Madonna will never grow fat, says personal trainer

Posted by Sylar On Saturday, January 17, 2009 3 comments

Queen of pop Madonna still manages to look half her age even at 50, and it is all thanks to the rigorous diet and exercise regime her personal trainer Tracy Anderson has put her on.
Madge follows a gruelling two-hour workout six days a week, and Anderson, 33, remains at her side every moment of it.

The trainer had been helping the singer maintain her health even when she was divorcing her hubby Guy Ritchie.
There are days when she doesn’t feel good and days when she’s having a hard time, but Madonna still works out for two hours whatever,” the Mirror quoted Anderson as saying.

“She’s consistent and she doesn’t ever make excuses. Nothing has changed since the divorce, Madonna hasn’t changed. Madonna will never look her age. She doesn’t even look half her age - she looks 19.

“I don’t have to scream at her because she’s so motivated. She organizes her time so she can train - she makes an appointment to do it and she keeps it, but two hours is the most she ever exercises in a day,” she stated.
Madonna was recently described as “half-starved” but Anderson claims that she eats well and even allows herself the occasional treat, which is sugar and gluten-free.

“All my clients eat. Madonna has a very healthy appetite. She doesn’t eat processed food, she’s very conscious of the quality of the things she eats but she has treats - she loves cupcakes,” she said.

“To say she is on a starvation diet is bull****. She burns a lot of calories.

She will never get fat. Why would she let it go? She relaxes but she’s smart, she knows that if she stops exercising she will have loose skin tone. Why should we criticize someone who works hard, is consistent and gets results because they’re smart with their time?” she added.

Nude photo of 20-year-old Madonna on auction block

Posted by Sylar On Saturday, January 17, 2009 0 comments

Christie’s auction house says a 30-year-old nude photo of Madonna, which earned her a $25 modeling fee, is expected to sell for at least $10,000.

The full frontal image was taken by Lee Friedlander and appeared in Playboy in 1985.
Matthieu Humery, head of Christie’s photography department, says Madonna was a 20-year-old dancer trying to make ends meet when she answered Friedlander’s newspaper ad seeking a nude model in 1979.

He says six photos from the shoot were sold to Playboy and the one up for auction Feb. 12 is “maybe the most explicit one.”

Another photo of Madonna, by Helmut Newton, is also in the auction. In that shot, she is wearing lingerie.

British event rider flies to America to teach Madonna

Posted by Sylar On Thursday, January 15, 2009 0 comments

cess_madonna_05_h British eventer Daisy Trayford is heading to Florida this week to coach Madonna for two weeks at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival (7 January-29 March) at Wellington, Florida.
Daisy, 27, has been teaching the popstar for two years with the connection starting when Madonna bought two horses from Exmoor Eventing, the business Daisy (née Binding) runs with her husband Richard.

"She had the horses on trial and asked if I would go down and help get her going on them," said Daisy. "The first year it was really busy. Last year was more difficult because she was on tour, but I was there most weekends, fitting it around my eventing."
Madonna flew one of the horses, all-rounder Boris, out to America six months ago and last week he was joined by the second one, young eventer Sportsfield Silver Lining.
"As soon as he's there and settled in she wants me to go out," said Daisy, who says she will probably get 24hr notice to fly out on Thursday or Friday.

Madonna has also bought two other horses from Daisy and Richard, who are at livery at Exmoor Eventing.

Daisy describes teaching Madonna as "really good fun".
"She's a dream pupil," she said. "She's very driven, listens to what you say and just wants to do it and improve. You can always get somewhere with someone like that.
"When I started teaching her she hadn't jumped at all and now she can jump a course of 1.05m. Jumping and hacking are her two favourite things."

Daisy says she wasn't startstruck when she started coaching the star, taking it as "just another chore".
"I'm pretty laid-back about things like that. She's very friendly and we have been to things like Christmas drinks and her 50th birthday party and met lots of stars."
Daisy is not the first eventer to teach Madonna, as in January 2006 Horse & Hound reported that Madonna was learning from William Fox-Pitt and particularly enjoyed riding Moon Man, who was put down in December.

Madonna tops the Los Angeles Times' Ultimate Top 10!

Posted by Sylar On Thursday, January 15, 2009 1 comments

It's official: Madonna tops the Los Angeles Times' Ultimate Top 10, an annual survey combining sales of concert tickets, albums and digital downloads to measure which acts were most popular with the broadest swath of music lovers.
Madonna was the No. 1 concert attraction in North America during the year, according to Pollstar, the concert-tracking magazine, and she enjoyed album sales to the tune of $12.5 million in addition to downloads of $2.3 million.

This year there's also a total split between Nielsen SoundScan's ranking of the 10 biggest-selling performers of 2008 and Pollstar's Top 10 highest-grossing North American concert tours. The highest anyTop 10 SoundScan act finished in Pollstar's 2008 ranking was No. 13, where the Jonas Brothers (No. 7 among album sellers) landed after playing to 1.3 million fans last year.
Concert revenue hit $4.2 billion in 2008, according to Pollstar, a 7 percent rise over the previous year, even though the number of tickets sold was down. An 8.4 percent increase in average ticket prices was behind the rise, figures that are "astounding considering the economic environment in which they were generated," Pollstar Editor Gary Bongiovanni said.
The road is still where artists tend to make the most money. Only three of the Nielsen SoundScanbiggest-selling artists of 2008 -- AC/DC, Coldplay and the Jonas Brothers -- make the Ultimate Top 10, even folding in their revenue from digital track sales.
The best example? Taylor Swift sold more albums than any other act last year: 4 million, giving her $52 million in revenue from album sales using $13 as the average price of a CD. But she placed No. 12 in the Ultimate Top 10 calculations because she played only a handful of concerts as a headliner. She spent most of the year as a supporting act on Rascal Flatts' tour.

That leaves the upper reaches of the Ultimate Top 10 to the veterans, and no one outperformed Madonna, whose combined income of $120 million is a drop from last year's winner, the Police, which logged $140.7 million.

1. Madonna ($120 million). The Material Girl took in $105.3 million from touring, in addition to $14.8 million from music sales. It's hard to decide what's more impressive. The average gross at her shows, mostly in stadiums, was $5.5 million, and she drew about 36,000 people per show. Additionally, the average ticket price was $153.88, easily the highest among Pollstar's Top 50 grossing tours. Worldwide, according to Pollstar, she amassed $281.6 million.

2. Celine Dion ($106.8 million). Dion posted her highest finish in a decade after ditching her residency at the Colosseum in Las Vegas for an old-fashioned, if high-tech, tour. She grossed $94 million, added $11.4 million in album sales and $1.3 million in digital tracks. Average ticket price: $119.00. Dion finished at No. 8 last year.

3. Kenny Chesney ($95.7 million). This favorite son of Luttrell, Tenn., again proved the most popular country music act on the road last year, pulling in $72.2 million, and was the only artist to sell more than 1 million tickets in North America. Chesney sold $20.8 million worth of albums and $2.7 million in digital tracks. Average ticket price: $71.24. He's up from No. 4 on last year's list.

4. Eagles ($90.7 million). The group might have taken the long road out of Eden, but it was pretty near paradise on the concert trail with the band's take of $73.4 million. CD sales added $15.6 million and the veteran act notched $1.7 million worth of downloads. Average ticket price: $128.82.

5. AC/DC ($82 million). The new "Black Ice" album took the veteran Australian hard rock band back to the top of the charts and also made its concert tour one of the year's hot tickets. The band's tally was almost evenly divided, with $37.5 million coming at the concert box office and $44.5 million from album sales. Like Kid Rock, AC/DC doesn't do digital tracks. Average ticket price: $99.73.

6. Coldplay ($81.6 million). Although finishing sixth, Coldplay is in the enviable position of balancing its power in concert and at retail. About $40.8 million worth of concert tickets were bolstered with $35 million in CD sales and $6 million worth of 99-cent track downloads. Average ticket price: $79.87.

7. Bon Jovi ($81.4 million). The New Jersey band posted another good year, with $70.4 million from 45 shows in 31 cities, plus $8.6 million in CD sales and $2.5 million in digital tracks. Average ticket price: $95.39.

Wonderland is back

Posted by Sylar On Monday, January 12, 2009 1 comments

"Wonderland", the ABC series created by Peter Berg aired just twice in 2000 and loosely based on New York's Bellevue hospital is being resurrected on Direct TV.

Wonderland's theme was composed by William Orbit during the sessions for the album Music and was sung, actually hummed, by Madonna. The short tv theme shared a lot of elements with the song Amazing.
